Nigeria Communication Commission Tennis League will serve off at the Federal Capital City next week for the first time with 12 teams set to fight for the N7million star prize money.
This was disclosed the Director of International Tennis Academy, Mr. Godwin Kienka, the organizer of the tournament during the draws held over the weekend at the Centre Court of the Abuja Tennis Club.
Speaking shortly after the draws, Kienka said it was done in “FIFA style” with the 12 teams ranked according to the combined points of their top five players; three men and two women – from the current rankings by the Nigeria Tennis Federation.
Kienka said 12 teams were grouped into Team White and Team Blue, with Team White comprising Team Tochvibe, Team Goshen, Kalotari, CBN Team, Orofina and Anambra Team.
Team Blue includes Leadway Assurance, Team Offikwu, Luik, Yetade, Next Generation and Team SBL.
“All the teams are very strong this year with quality tennis players and they will play in the eight centres across the country.”
“One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s competition is that we have a Governor sponsoring a team in his own capacity which to us is laudable,” he said.
In his address, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Professor Umar Danbatta, who was represented by Mrs. A Solanke said the commission was proud of the tournament for the positive impact it has had on the players.
